On 25th March 2015, ELSA Brno held another Institutional Visit. This time, we made a visit to the Office of the Public Defender of Rights. More than 20 participants from Faculty of Law of Masaryk University were eager to listen interesting lecture and to join a debate on a topic discrimination and antidiscrimination. The speakers were Mgr. Vojtěch Pospíšil and Mgr. Blanka Bednářová from the Departure of Equal Treatment.

During the first part of the presentation, main competences of The Public Defender of Rights and the history of this institution were explained to our participants. That was followed by another presentation on the main topic which was related to 21st March which is International Day for the Racial Discrimination. We were explained the terms concerned to discrimination and great part of the presentation was also focused on ‘newly’ approved antidiscrimination law. Looking at many of tables and graphs, we realised that big part of inhabitants does not know yet that in the Czech Republic does exist such a great legal protection against discrimination. The results of further research says that more than half of inhabitants has faced a discrimination – direct or even indirect, yet only small percentage looked for The Public Defender of Rights and used legal instruments to protect their own personality. So that is why the bigger public awareness is important to solve this problem. For better understanding, we were told some interesting examples from practice that we clearly could see discrimination issue and the more participants got to know about this topic the more they were interested to join the debate. During the whole presentation, questions related to actual problems with discrimination cause of race, gender or origin were asked. These questions made everyone to think about it and then the time was up so there was no more space to other questions.

The results from the evaluation forms that were send to the participants after the event were that the interpretation of speakers was interesting and benefitting and the most of them very positively evaluated examples from the practice. Another plus was the explanation of the way how The Public Defender of Rights may offer his help.
